Tuesday, June 13, marks 81 days until the Florida Gators kickoff against the Michigan Wolverines in Dallas, Texas and we’re going to count down the days with the Florida roster until that game. Number 81 for the Florida Gators is occupied by junior receiver Antonio Callaway.
There haven’t been many prospects in recent years that were as underappreciated coming out of high school that turned into stars in college as Antonio Callaway. A three-star prospect out of Miami’s Booker T. Washington, Callaway was a late get for Jim McElwain in his first class at Florida. He was a first team Class AAAA All-State selection, but that wasn’t enough for all the scouting services. In his senior season he accounted for 818 yards and seven touchdowns in just seven games.
Callaway was an instant hit at Florida as a freshman. He appeared in all 14 games in 2015 and started in 13 of them. He is the only true freshmen in Florida history to record three different 100+ yard receiving games. He received freshman All-American honors after his 678 yards, also a new freshman record at Florida. CBS Sports named him an All-American as a punt returner.
As a sophomore in 2016 Callaway missed the spring with an off-the-field issue. He started in 11 of the 12 games he appeared in. By the end of the year he became the first player in Florida history to score five different ways in their career. He has scored via reception, passing, rushing, punt return, and kick return. He caught 54 passes for 724 yards and three touchdowns in his sophomore campaign.
Callaway was able to go through his first spring football session in 2017 in preparation for his junior season. Unfortunately he ran into trouble with the law after the spring and any punishment in terms of missed playing time has yet to be determined. Still, he is a key factor in the Florida offense and will get many preseason honors heading into the campaign.
