Friday, June 2, marks 92 days until the Florida Gators kickoff against the Michigan Wolverines in Dallas, Texas and we’re going to count down the days with the Florida roster until that game. Number 92 for the Florida Gators is occupied by redshirt sophomore defensive end Jabari Zuniga.
Jabari Zuniga was another of the late commitments for Jim McElwain while in his first two months on campus as the head coach at Florida. Zuniga was a commitment to NC State when Florida got involved and a new name not familiar with Florida recruitniks.
Things changed with that latter group when it became known that the Gators were looking hard and those recruitniks finally watched his senior season highlights.
Zuniga was a three-star recruit in high school, but that was likely based on his size before his senior year of prep football. He grew three inches as a senior and his film was off the charts. When Florida got involved, others started taking notice as well, but the Gators stepped in quick and hard and won him over.
He visited in late January and would sign with the Gators a little more than a week later.
Zuniga did redshirt as a freshman with all of the quality depth the Gators had on roster. However, he was constantly noticed in practice and there were times they thought about lifting the redshirt.
As a redshirt freshman in 2016 it is fair to say that Zuniga made a pretty big impression. He ended up leading the team in sacks with five and also in quarterback hurries with 11. He finished with 29 tackles and played in all 13 games with three starts.
Like CeCe Jefferson, Zuniga has excellent power to go with tremendous quickness off the edge. He has enough size to play either end spot and will do just that as a redshirt sophomore in 2017. He is a bog [art of one of the deepest units on the entire team.
