Daytona Beach Mainland offensive tackle Travis Robinson, a sophomore, was offered a scholarship by the Florida Gators (COURTESY MAINLAND HIGH SCHOOL) Mainland sophomore Travis Robinson didn’t believe his coach when he was told Monday he had received a scholarship offer from the Florida Gators.
“At first I just thought my coach was messing with me,” the Mainland offensive tackle said.
But he had a message to call area recruiter and Gators receivers coach Kerry Dixon II, so he did.
“I called the coach and he said it was for real,” said Robinson, a 6-foot-5, 335-pound offensive tackle at the Daytona Beach school. “He said he was glad I was excited about my offer and that they hope to see me there in a couple of years.”
Robinson said he was once a huge Gators fan.
“I had liked the Gators when Tim Tebow was on there,” Robinson said, “but then after he left I kind of moved to Florida State.”
FSU could be next. The UF offer is the second for Robinson, who also has FAU on his list, which will just continue to get longer. He said he would also love to see offers from teams like Alabama, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon and LSU.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I hope I get more,” Robinson said.
He’s an agile big man and coaches see his athleticism.
“I think they like my size and my athletic ability to be able to move how I do … and my personality,” Robinson said.
His teammates were quick to chide him about his first big-time offer.
“They were just making jokes and doing stuff like ‘Chomp, chomp,’ when I walked by or saying, ‘Gator crossing,’ ” he said.
Robinson is part of what is probably the biggest and best offensive line unit in Central Florida, and one of the best in the entire state. Rising seniors Adonis Boone (6-5, 280) and Raymond Horton (6-3, 315) also help make up a formidable Mainland front.“We’re getting better and better every day. Everybody is doing their jobs and learning more the more we go at it each day,” Robinson said.
