Top plays of Florida’s season: No. 4

SEC Country is looking back at the top 10 plays of Florida’s season.

Here is No. 4: The setup

With an SEC East title on the line, Florida traveled to LSU for its final conference contest of the season. The matchup was originally scheduled for Oct. 8 at The Swamp, but the game was postponed and moved because of Hurricane Matthew. The Tigers scored a touchdown on their first possession and drove inside the 10-yard line on the second series after converting their fifth straight third-down attempt midway through the second quarter. LSU was in position to take a 14-3 lead. The play

On first-and-goal at the 7-yard line, quarterback Danny Etling handed the ball to Derrius Guice in a single-back set. Gators defensive tackle Caleb Brantley was matched up 1-on-1 with LSU left guard Will Clapp and blew by him. As he penetrated into the backfield and began to fall, Brantley punched the ball out of Guice’s hands before he could bounce to the outside. Florida linebacker Kylan Johnson recovered the fumble at the 12-yard line. The result

Florida did not score off the turnover, but Brantley kept LSU from taking a two-score lead with the first forced fumble of his career. It also was the first of four goal-line stands by UF, and Brantley helped the Gators make another stop in the third quarter. With the Tigers facing third-and-goal at the 1, Brantley tackled Leonard Fournette in the backfield for a 1-yard loss. Those two plays by Brantley were key in Florida’s 16-10 upset win against LSU, improving his stock for the 2017 NFL Draft.
