Loading Florida quarterback Austin Appleby had one of his best games in a Gators uniform against South Carolina, throwing two touchdowns in the first half of a 20-7 win. The victory kept Florida in control of the SEC East as Jim McElwain looks to guide this team back to Atlanta for a second straight season with a backup quarterback.

Appleby played well enough against the Gamecocks to suggest he might be an upgrade from Treon Harris in 2015, executing whatever great game plan McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier have cooked up for Florida’s opponent.

But Appleby also delivers off the field and was honored this week by the SEC on CBS as one of the game’s Scholar Athletes of the week. Since arriving to campus last in January as a graduate student, the former Purdue quarterback has spent time volunteering at Habitat for Humanity and has visited patients at UF Health while maintaining a 4.0 GPA studying sports management.

South Carolina’s Scholar Athlete representative is senior kicker Elliott Fry. Fry is the school’s all-time leading scorer and a two-time member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll with a 3.189 GPA in Marketing. As a seven-year-old, Fry was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and his service in the community has included work with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
